From our correspondent on the West Coast
The Lucksmiths, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Tullycraft and Adrew Kaffer live at Berbati's Pan, Portland, OR - May 3, 2005
The show in Portland was great - Berbati's was less than half full and it really felt like a Tuesday night, but the bikes in the coatcheck and stories of people riding scooters from afar made the empty place feel warmer.
First up was Andrew Kaffer (formerly in Kissing Book) who played with a whole bunch of people at different times during his set (backup singers, Mark from the Lucksmiths, a violinist, steel guitar, etc...). The mixture of people led to a bigger sound and you could really feel it when they played a slightly funky lounge number that went "I wanna move in the business world the way I move when I'm with my girl".
All Girl Summer Fun Band was great as usual and even felt a little bit more rocknroll than the last time I saw them.
Tullycraft - I had "Superboy and Supergirl" on a tape way back in highschool, but haven't really kept up them since. So it was a pleasant surprise to see them on stage with 4-part harmonies and more guitar-power than ever before - no shoegazing jangly twee, this was all powerpop superrock. But still twee.
The Lucksmiths - I've never seen them actually up on a stage before. New kickass songs + having their amps and drums at ear level meant a really great sound. There was no crying or autographs, but I did sing along unabashedly and the fun and excitement of it reminded me how much more envigorating it is to see them live. The recordings are fantastic, especially this more heavily layered new stuff, but the trick is that when you see them live, they bring back the carefree energy of their early recordings and add it to the complexity and all around coolness of their new songs.
Ringraziamo per questo reportage Brian che ci scrive dall'Oregon. Hope to meet you someday, man!
