Love is a wave, hate is included

Spesso si ricordano i Blue Orchids "soltanto" per essere una band nata da ex componenti della prima formazione dei Fall, mettendo così in secondo piano oltre tre decenni di una carriera che, per quanto irregolare e dagli esiti alterni, ha mostrato una tenace coerenza e anche una certa intransigenza che mi sembrano semplicemente ammirevoli. Gente come Martin Bramah e Una Baines, ma penso anche al loro contemporaneo Vic Godard con i suoi Subway Sect, a cui i Blue Orchids si possano accostare, è fatta di una stoffa di altri tempi, più robusta e duratura.
Nel 2018 i Blue Orchids hanno pubblicato Righteous Harmony Fist e, a quanto pare, hanno già pronto un seguito. Nel frattempo, a giugno faranno uscire un album di cover intitolato The Magical Record Of Blue Orchids. Anzi, per la precisione, nove cover più un testo originale e inedito di Mark E. Smith intitolato Addicted To The Day messo ora in musica da Bramah. Lo stesso Bramah ha raccontato alla webzine Louder Than War la genesi del disco:

On this album we use other people’s words to tell a story not originally intended by the various writers. We weave a thread of our own intent through these disparate fragments binding them in a commonality of purpose to coax into coalescence a conception.
This is the telling of a Faustian story as old as the soul of Man but told in the exalted language of psych/garage rock.

Some six years ago, Crystal Stilts - with infinite taste - covered Blue Orchids' Low Profile and did a fine job strengthening its elegiac tone without losing the song's subtle message of inspiration, making it among the best cover of a Blue Orchids tune ever. So taken by this version was Martin Bramah that when he was putting together a sort of concept album of covers by (mostly) obscure 60s bands, he couldn't resist doing a cover of Crystal Stilts' Love Is A Wave which slows the song down a bit to bring its lovely melody to fore and make even more obvious that a well-written song is adaptable to many forms.

A dire il vero, a un primo ascolto la cover mi sembrava un po' legnosa e troppa asciutta, tanto ero abituato al suono profondo e frenetico della band newyorkese. A poco a poco, però, ho imparato ad apprezzare come i Blue Orchids siano riusciti a estrarre da questo piccolo classico (almeno per me) un'anima più semplice e Sixties, di una spensieratezza quasi Kinks.
