L'altra sera al Sundance Film Festival ha fatto il suo debutto God Help The Girl, il primo film di Stuart Murdoch dei Belle & Sebastian. L'opera era attesa da almeno sei o sette anni, a un certo punto sembrava non se ne dovesse più fare nulla, nel frattempo c'era stato un disco (bello ma non esattamente memorabile, posso dirlo?) e così stamattina mi sono precipitato a leggere che si diceva in giro.
Raccolgo qui una prima rassegna di link: vorrei sbagliarmi ma l'impressione è che si tratti di recensioni non troppo negative proprio solo perché è coinvolto Murdoch. Il film sembra aver dato l'idea di essere un bel Tumbr molto twee e molto di buon gusto, ma senza troppa coesione e forza. Spero di essere smentito e soprattutto spero si possa vederlo presto anche in Italia. RomaPopfest, Frigopop, Cielo Sotto Milano, Unplugged in Monti, WWNBB e altri disperati indiepoppers della penisola, unite and take over: sotto con un kickstarter e organizziamo la première!
- Il Guardian è quello più morbido e diplomatico: "It's warm and generous, verging on the sentimental; a film that crystallises the best and worst of Belle and Sebastian's songwriting skills".
-Il Los Angeles Times mette assieme un po' di frasi di circostanza, preferisce non approfondire troppo la critica e descrive invece il contesto da cui è nato il film
- The Playlist / Indiewire è uno di quelli che ci va giù più pesante: "a collection of poorly shot, low-budget music videos stitched together onto a anorexically thin storyline, than it is a fully formed and cohesive movie."
- Screen Daily ci gira intorno, con una morale del tipo, beh tanto se andate a vederlo è solo perché conoscete la band e non vi aspettate granché
- The Dissolve, il blog cinematografico di Pitchfork, mette nero su bianco qualcosa che un po' temiamo tutti: "Murdoch is attempting a pastiche of his favorite movies the way he pastiches his favorite pop songs in Belle & Sebastian. [...] But while Murdoch exhibits masterful control in a recording studio, he isn’t what I would call a natural-born filmmaker."
- FilmComment scrive uno dei pezzi più dettagliati letti finora e conclude cercando di vedere il bicchiere mezzo pieno, cosa a cui voglio credere fortissimo pure io: "God Help the Girl is not a film for cynics—either of the musical or cinematic persuasion—but it’s done with good humor and integrity, and for all its flaws, I’d rather have it over a hundred conventional jukebox musicals of the Mamma Mia! school. If you’re even remotely willing to entertain a nostalgic fantasy of bohemian cafés inhabited by wan, bookish boys and girls in bobs and berets, then you may find it harder to resist then you’d expect."
